In 1988 he founded the Institute of Graphic Arts of Oaxaca, a space to disseminate and exhibit his private collection of graphic work, as well as works by other important Latin artists. In 2005 he was awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize by the Swedish foundation Right Livelihood Award for his work in defense of cultural heritage.
He has participated in numerous exhibitions worldwide and his work is part of the collections of the Museums of Modern Art in Mexico City, Philadelphia, New York and Paris, as well as the Tate Gallery in London and the Kunstnaneshus in Oslo, among others.
